Behind the Scenes: THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW

“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” stands as a cult classic, an iconic film that has captivated audiences with its wild characters, catchy tunes, and over-the-top aesthetics since its release in 1975. At the heart of this extravagant spectacle lies a link to the world of fashion, with Terry de Havilland’s shoes playing a memorable role in shaping the film’s distinctive style.

In the realm of “Rocky Horror,” where eccentricity reigns supreme, Terry de Havilland’s bold and flamboyant footwear perfectly complements the film’s outrageous costumes and outlandish characters. The towering platforms were worn by the glamorous and eccentric transvestite scientist, Dr. Frank-N-Furter played by Tim Curry.

A replica of the style featured in The Rocky Horror Picture Show is available to view at the Icons of British Fashion exhibition at Blenheim Palace.

Inspiration Today

This rebellious punk rock style has inspired some of the current collection. Loud buckled boots, chunky patent black platforms and crystal embellished heels all drew inspiration from the 70’s iconic film.

The punk movement began among teens and young adults rebelling against the political and social norms established by previous generations. After the peace and love messaging of bands in the 1960s, punks in the 1970s believed the message of rebellion against norms needed to be sent more combatively.
